DURATION
15 Months

BUDGET

$3 - 5 million

Monarch was engaged under a Design and Construct contract to complete fire safety compliance works across the RAAF Wagga Base.  Monarch completed upgrades to wet fire, dry fire, emergency lighting and access safety across 20 accommodation buildings, 15 aircraft hangars and 6 office/training facilities.

The works included:

  • new fire hose reels, hydrants and boosters including inground hydraulic works

  • fire sprinkler extensions

  • visual warning devices, emergency and exit lighting, and public address system upgrades

  • mechanical override provisions

  • upgrade/replacement handrails and balustrades

  • flammable storage cabinet upgrades

  • door maintenance

  • signage

  • emergency egress improvements

This project had its challenges with impacts to the original scope and program. During the initial design stage and subsequent early works, it was identified that the existing Fire Indicator Panels and associated detection devices were past their useful life and unable to be incorporated into the new building management system. Monarch investigated suitable solutions and coordinated the full replacement across 16 buildings, providing long term maintenance benefits to the client.

Further challenges included the identification of contaminated spoil, lead and asbestos during works. This required Monarch to work within strict Defence protocols to safely isolate, store, test and remove the material from base whilst maintaining program and minimising cost.

Monarch successfully managed the complexities of working across 40 buildings through careful planning, stakeholder communication and tight subcontractor management.
